Birth Chart Calculator — Rising, Moon & Houses

What Is a Birth Chart?

A birth chart (also called a natal chart) is a map of where every planet was in the sky at the exact moment you were born. It's the foundation of Western astrology — far more detailed than your Sun sign alone. While your Sun sign describes your core identity, your birth chart reveals the full picture: how you think, love, communicate, fight, create, and grow.

To calculate an accurate birth chart, you need three pieces of information: your date of birth, your exact time of birth (hour and minute), and your place of birth (city). The time and location are critical because they determine your Rising sign and the house placements — which change every two hours as the Earth rotates.

On Taroscoper, you can calculate your birth chart for free and see your Sun, Rising, Moon, and Midheaven signs — the "Big Three" (plus one) that astrologers consider the most important points in any chart.

The Big Three: Sun, Moon & Rising

Your Sun Sign — Core Identity

Your Sun sign is the sign most people know — it's determined by your birth date alone. It represents your fundamental sense of self: your ego, your vitality, the way you express your willpower and creative energy. When someone asks "what's your sign?", they're asking about your Sun.

The Sun sign is your conscious identity — who you are when you're fully expressed and living authentically. But it's only one piece of the puzzle.

Your Rising Sign (Ascendant) — First Impression

Your Rising sign (Ascendant) is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment of your birth. It changes approximately every two hours, which is why your birth time is essential for an accurate chart.

The Rising sign determines your outward persona — how others perceive you before they know you well, your physical appearance tendencies, your natural approach to new situations, and the "mask" you wear in public. Many astrologers consider the Rising sign even more important than the Sun sign for understanding day-to-day behavior.

Your Rising sign also sets the house system of your entire chart, which is why it's called the "chart ruler."

Your Moon Sign — Emotional Core

Your Moon sign represents your emotional nature — how you process feelings, what makes you feel safe, what you need in intimate relationships, and how you react under stress. It's the most private part of your chart: the you that only close friends and partners see.

The Moon moves through a new sign approximately every 2.5 days, so even people born a day apart can have different Moon signs. A Leo Sun with a Scorpio Moon experiences life very differently than a Leo Sun with a Sagittarius Moon — and the Moon sign is usually the reason.

Your Midheaven (MC) — Career & Public Life

The Midheaven (Medium Coeli or MC) sits at the very top of your chart and represents your career direction, public reputation, and highest aspirations. It describes the kind of work that feels meaningful to you, how you want to be seen professionally, and the legacy you're building.

The 12 Houses — Where Life Happens

Your birth chart is divided into 12 houses, each governing a different area of life. Planets sitting in a house bring their energy to that life domain. Here's what each house represents:

  • 1st House (Ascendant) — Self, identity, appearance, first impressions
  • 2nd House — Money, possessions, values, self-worth
  • 3rd House — Communication, siblings, short trips, learning
  • 4th House (IC) — Home, family, roots, emotional foundation
  • 5th House — Creativity, romance, children, fun, self-expression
  • 6th House — Health, daily routines, work habits, service
  • 7th House (Descendant) — Partnerships, marriage, close relationships, open enemies
  • 8th House — Transformation, shared resources, intimacy, death and rebirth
  • 9th House — Higher education, travel, philosophy, belief systems
  • 10th House (Midheaven) — Career, public image, reputation, ambition
  • 11th House — Friendships, groups, hopes, social causes
  • 12th House — Subconscious, spirituality, hidden enemies, self-undoing

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need my exact birth time for a birth chart?

For your Sun sign, no — just your birthday is enough. But for your Rising sign, Moon sign, Midheaven, and house placements, you need your birth time (ideally within 15 minutes). Check your birth certificate, hospital records, or ask a parent. Without birth time, the chart is incomplete but still valuable for planetary sign placements.

What if I don't know my birth time?

You can still calculate your Sun sign and get a general planetary picture. Some astrologers use "noon charts" (setting the time to 12:00 PM) as an approximation, but the Rising sign and house placements won't be accurate. For the full experience, try to find your exact time.

What's the difference between a birth chart and a horoscope?

Your birth chart is a fixed snapshot of the sky at your birth — it never changes. A horoscope is a prediction based on current planetary transits interacting with your birth chart. Your birth chart is the map; your horoscope is the weather. Taroscoper offers both — the birth chart calculator and live transit readings.

How does Western astrology differ from Chinese astrology?

Western astrology uses the 12 zodiac signs based on the position of the Sun at your birth. Chinese astrology uses a 12-animal cycle based on your birth year, combined with elements and Yin/Yang polarity. They're completely different systems that offer complementary perspectives. Try both on Taroscoper.
